Pelvic Girdle Pain in Pregnancy

Pelvic girdle pain is a common pregnancy-related condition that affects the joints and ligaments of the pelvis. It can cause pain during walking, climbing stairs, turning in bed and other everyday movements.

Pelvic girdle pain (PGP) is a common pregnancy-related condition that can cause discomfort around the pelvis, hips, buttocks, groin, or lower back. Symptoms often become more noticeable when walking, turning in bed, climbing stairs, or standing on one leg.

PGP occurs when the joints and muscles around the pelvis are placed under increased strain during pregnancy. Although it can be very painful, it does not usually cause harm to your baby, and many women improve significantly with the right support

How is it diagnosed?

A specialist pelvic health physiotherapist will assess your symptoms, movement, posture, and pelvic function to identify whether the pain is coming from the pelvic joints or surrounding muscles.

Early assessment can often make everyday activities more manageable and help you stay active during pregnancy. One-to-one physiotherapy allows treatment to be tailored to your stage of pregnancy and individual symptoms.
